Starting a career in business can lead to several opportunities down the road, encompassing everything from launching your own company to being a leader in your field. For individuals who are living with disabilities, a business career can also mean creating a flexible, rewarding path that allows you to do what you love. Learn about how to start looking for available jobs — whether they’re freelance or at an existing company — and build up your resume.

Search job postings

Getting started with freelance work is a great way to build up your resume or to branch out on your own and create a business, and the good news is you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Finding work offering video editing services, marketing, or copywriting are three popular options, and there are several ways to find the perfect job online. Take a look at job boards for listings and get a feel for what’s available. Then, create a profile for your services that companies and individuals can read when they’re ready to find a freelancer. Be sure to make your prices and delivery time clear, and keep in mind that great reviews from satisfied customers will go a long way towards helping you get future jobs.

Consider higher education

Whether you’re interested in starting your own business or want to snag a job with a high-profile company, it’s important to consider getting a degree to ensure you’ll get the salary you want. Finance, accounting, economics, and human resources are some of the most lucrative jobs in business, and you can go for a master’s, MBA, or bachelor’s degree.

Learn about what interests you

There are many aspects of the business world to choose from, so if starting your own brand doesn’t appeal to you at the moment, consider looking for an internship or two. This will let you try out a job in a particular area to see if it’s a good fit for you. Many internships these days are paid or offer college credit, which means even more benefits. There are several ways to find a great internship, but you can start by networking with other students, friends and family, and coworkers. It also helps to have some experience in a relevant field, so fine-tune your resume and think about what sort of unique skills you can bring to the table.

Do your research

You have the education. You have the drive. You have the experience. Now what? When it comes to finding the perfect entry-level job, it’s essential to start out with research. Read up on the companies you’re interested in — not just their daily business practices, but how and when they were founded, what their mission statement is, and who their competitors are. The more you can learn about a company, the easier the interview will be because you’ll be comfortable with talking about how you’ll fit in there. It might also help to find out what their immediate needs are so you can make a point of highlighting your skills in those areas.

Starting a new career can be daunting, but for individuals who are living with a disability, it can be extremely liberating, as well. Utilize resources on social media and at school when you’re ready to network and learn how to create a stunning resume that will showcase your skills, education, and experience so you can find the best possible job fit.
