Doctors and chronic illness – a vital topic for the dweller. Good medical personnel are indispensable in the life of the invisibly disabled. Good docs are a blessing from God.

Our medical practitioners can be male or female,
come in all shapes and sizes,
have knowledge in differing fields,
talk a lot—or not.
In fact, each one is individual.
First-rate docs are essential for good health for storm dwellers – those with unending chronic conditions. These hurt-ers likely need more medical care than others. It may take trial and error to find a doctor that’s a good fit for them.
Dwellers need:
- Ongoing relationship with a good primary care doctor
- Reason: he/she oversees all the specialists dwellers will likely need
- Specialist(s) for their conditions
- Various therapists
- Someone to oversee all prescription and over-the-counter drugs
- Someone to keep track of all the tests and diagnoses
But what makes a good doc? Or a good nurse, tech, therapist?
Look for these traits:
- Know how to listen.
- Believe what you say.
- Ask fitting questions or make appropriate comments.
- Seek clarification when they don’t understand you.
- Apply their knowledge to your situation.
- Spend the necessary time with you.
I’ve not always had good docs. A few don’t even try to understand; some try, but just don’t get it. Some won’t take the time. And then, some think they’re God. But, some are just weird.
Humorously ridiculous experiences:One highly respected (I thought) specialist I was referred to had a unique diagnosis – or rather, non-diagnosis. He said, “You don’t have Post-Polio Syndrome because I don’t believe there is any such thing. Or if there is, only people who had polio really bad get it.” ??? (Found out later I was sent to the wrong doc!)
My friend absolutely needs a good specialist. Because of her needs, she must go to a certain clinic. She had a special name for the only specialist she could see: Dr. Jekyll. That name says it all! She rejoiced when he retired.
Doctors and chronic illness
A doctor who deals with patients with chronic conditions has written an excellent article from the doctor’s perspective. He shares why he says that these patients scare doctors! And he explains why people who will never get well are a challenge to doctors. He includes specific ideas for these patients when they have to see a new doctor. It is well worth the time for dwellers to read it. It provides an excellent investment of time for observers who look at it.
What do you think?
What has been your experience with the medical community? Please leave a comment, so we can laugh, rejoice, or cry with you? Do you have other tips that might help someone else? Please share.
Til next time, Connected Carole
