What It’s Like to Be an Invisibly Disabled Mother

IT’S HERE TODAY!

FJ (Joe, my husband) and I announce Part 1 as a guest on “I Am Not My Pain,” the podcast by Melissa Adams. It debuted at 4am, Central Time, today, June 6, 2023. I speak from my viewpoint as an invisibly disabled mother, and FJ shares his experiences as husband and dad. Part 2 appears next Tuesday, June 13.

Melissa has entitled the episodes, “Sunbreaks in Unending Storms–A Journey of Love and Parenthood While Chronically Ill.” (Apple podcasts, Spotify) A very apt description of our life. Loving each other and our two sons prevented parenting from being a troublesome chore.

Maybe you are a mom or dad at the beginning of your chronic illness. Or maybe you are a close friend or family member of a parent dealing with chronic illness. Possibly you may be near burnout after being chronically ill for an extended time.

Listen as us tell our story, complete with problems we faced as well as good times we enjoyed. These podcasts include tips based on our experiences.

Tom and Bill were ten and seven when my first injury occurred, forty-plus years ago. So, our narrative begins when parenting young children and continues through the time of grandchildren.

Of course, some aspects of parenting are no different from those faced by healthy parents. But illness and disabilities add difficulties to the task. We cover good times and not-so-good times.

We hope these podcasts will help whether you are an ill parent, a supportive parent, or a helpful friend.

Wrapping-up

FJ and I had fun with this podcast. Melissa was a joy to work with. I must say, though, it stretched our memories to reach back forty-plus years to the start of my problems. To remember what it was like parenting as an invisibly disabled mother, and FJ loving and supporting me and being an exceptional dad.
